Embroidery in Helsinki

What's better than music I love? That's easy. Music I love + craft I love.

Shoe Whore

I haven't knit a stitch since Vegas so I haven't had much to blog. I did, however, want to share two new loves in my life.

I want every single pair of shoes here. Seriously, I love, love, love these. Thanks to DFM for finding them.

I picked up Vampire Weekend yesterday and I have been listening to it constantly. You have to check them out.

Music From Rock Band

I effing love to play Rock Band. Today I sang for the first time. I'm terrible but it was super fun. Here are some of the songs from the game.

Reminiscing

I just shared this story with a friend and now I'm sharing it with you.

Not too long I came across an old copy of Disintegration by The Cure and it made me remember being 14 in Albuquerque and my Mormon skate punk boyfriend who lived on the other side of town, 45 minutes away (I was by the mesa and he was by the mountains). He would write the lyrics to Cure songs and send them to me in the mail. I usually only got to see him at church dances (Mormons love to dance you know) and we would complain about the choice of music, C+C Music Factory, MC Hammer, NKOTB, and try to get the DJ to play "better" music like Ministry and DRI. But even when our music came on we didn't dance because it wasn't in keeping with our view of ourselves. Later we'd try to find a quiet spot (never alone, we were heavily chaperoned) where we could hold hands and talk music or school. I was a freshman and he was a junior but I was the first girl he ever kissed. I thought he was so sensitive. Last time I heard about the boy was probably 12 years ago. He'd moved to Salt Lake City and was all skinhead. It's funny how much finding that old CD made me remember.

Wolf Parade

I'm going to see Stars in Montreal on my birthday! Thank you, Reba.
I've really been digging a lot of Canadia Indie music lately and thought I'd share a little bit with you. I am especially loving Wolf Parade. Hype Machine has some links up. So stop what you're doing (reading my blog) and go there right now to check them out.

Who Am I?
Things last.fm has taught me:
1) I listen to a lot of music
2) I'm surprised I have a high incommon rating with anyone OR I'm surprised I don't have a high in common rating with everyone.

29 August 2007

I'm a bad blogger.

First the good news: I'm all better! That's really it, there's no bad news.
It's been a long time since I last posted and even longer since I replied to anyone's comments. I do still have all of your emails and I will reply soon.

I didn't really knit all that much while I was sick but I have been trying to work on a sock pattern for the Summer of Socks. Here's my test sock. I didn't end up going with any of these patterns.
IMG_1502.jpg
Click the pick to go to flickr and see all the patterns.
I really like the top pattern but I think it's too much like the snicket socks to be original.
I did eventually settle on a pattern and am in the process of test knitting and charting now.

I also received my package from my last.fm/ravelry swap partner.
IMG_1503.jpg
The package is awesome! It contained a CD, a card, some beads (not pictured) and a beautiful skein of Cider Moon yarn in Hocus Crocus. I've been wanting to try Cider Moon and I adore the colors.

Here's the playlist from the CD.

This is the second time I've done a simple package and one skein swap ad I love it!

Also in pre-sickness knitting I made a pair of Saartje's Bootees for a woman at work who's expecting.
IMG_1494.jpg
The yarn is left over from the Bloody Mary socks I knit for my Sock It To Me pal.

What else?

Oh, I've picked up my hoop again for the frist time in about 15 years.

My first practice project.

A shirt I made for Elah's first day of school. She'll be in 2nd grade this year (!) which at her school makes her a Tau. It's a big deal, for the first 2 years she was in the same classroom so this is her first big change in awhile. She loves the shirt and when I gave it to her she gave me a huge hug and told me that she thought she'd cry. Only I could have a child who gets verklempt.

*whew* OK, that's it for now. Sorry it took so long Stoneking and Jess.

My Soundtrack

I saw this over at Crafty Brainwave and it seemed like it could be fun (or embarrasing if I got all my crappy, guilty pleasure music). It did make me realize how varied my musical tastes are and I was surprised that no reggae came up since I have a ton.

If your life were a soundtrack, what would the music be?

here's how it works:
1. open your library (iTunes, winamp, media player, iPod)
2. put it on shuffle
3. press play
4. for every question, type the song that's playing
5. new question-- press the next button
6. don't lie and try to pretend you're cool

I made a knitting iMix here: iTMS link. Hope you like it.

Hasidic Reggae

I have a new favorite artist, Matisyahu. He sets the mic on fire and tears up the stage with energy I haven't seen in a long time. True he followed Phish on tour for awhile but I can overlook that small fact. See a video here. If you only hear a smidge, download King Without a Crown and Beat Box (I luz me a man who can beat box).

Damn You iTunes!

Well, I just did some more impulse shopping at iTunes.

Purchased Songs:
Biochemical Equation - MF Doom, RZA & Think Different iTunes
I Hope (Katrina Charity Version) - Dixie Chicks iTunes

Purchased Albums (I know I just dated myself):
Third Degree / Confidence / Global Dynamics EP - Dilated Peoples iTunes
Schla Demos - The Schla La Las iTunes
Essentially Naked - Bif Naked iTunes Amazon
Over and Over - The 88 iTunes Amazon

And this is after I took stuff out of my cart! I still really want to go back and get the Roadrunner Records 25th (iTunes) but I'm trying to pretend like a have a modicum of self control.

Ever notice how my posts seem to get more and more links when I'm supposed to be doing my homework? At least I locked my knitting in my trunk so I couldn't get to it.

Genomic Dub Collective

I love nerds! Meet the Genomic Dub Collective and blending of reggae and science.

Objectives:
To give birth to a new musical genre, Genomic Dub, that:

  • engages the interest, quickens the pulse and hi-jacks the brain of the listener.
  • encodes biological sequence data into dub music.
  • celebrates the achievements of science, particularly in the field of genomics.
  • celebrates the lives and works of scientists engaged in biomedical science.
  • highlights the common threads that link current scientific and social issues with the past, with a particular emphasis on the lives and works of Erasmus and Charles Darwin, Haile Selassie (Ras Tafari) and their contemporaries.
  • explores the interface between science and society.
  • brings an appreciation of science to a wider public.
  • brings an appreciation of reggae and of Jamaican history and culture to a scientific audience.
